How to use the rock calculator

This calculator turns a measured rock, gravel, stone, or sand area into volume, estimated bulk weight, coverage, bags, and optional material cost. Start with the actual finished footprint, choose the closest shape, and use the installed material depth—not the full excavation depth when part of the section is soil, geotextile, or another base layer.

  1. Choose the project preset. It supplies a typical starting depth, material, waste setting, and compaction setting. Every preset remains editable.
  2. Measure the geometry. Use rectangle for beds and driveways, circle for round areas, trench for narrow runs, or direct volume when a supplier or plan already gives cubic measure.
  3. Confirm the bulk density. The presets describe loose bulk material, including voids between particles. Replace the preset with the supplier's value when one is available.
  4. Review adjustments. Waste and compaction serve different purposes; turn them on only when they match the material and installation method.
  5. Calculate and round for ordering. Compare the result with the supplier's selling unit, minimum load, truck capacity, and delivery terms.

Formula and units

Rectangular volume = length × width × depth
Round volume = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × depth
Trench volume = trench length × trench width × depth
Estimated weight = adjusted volume × editable bulk density

Reference basis: fixed unit conversions follow the NIST SI conversion tables. Bulk density is product- and condition-specific; the FHWA Field Materials Manual documents aggregate sampling and moisture-density testing; supplier or project data for the actual product and condition should replace the planning preset when available. Inputs are converted internally to meters and cubic meters, then displayed in cubic yards, cubic feet, metric tons, short tons, and pounds. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. The order adjustment shown in the result identifies the multiplier used, so waste and compaction are never hidden inside the final tonnage.

Worked gravel example

For a 64 ft × 11 ft area at 4 in deep, the measured volume is 64 × 11 × (4 ÷ 12) = 234.67 ft³, or 8.69 yd³. At the editable gravel preset of 1,600 kg/m³ (about 1.35 short tons/yd³), the base weight is 11.72 short tons. Adding 10% for waste produces the calculator's 12.89-ton order basis. A supplier density or quote can change that result, so keep the measurement, density, adjustment, and price together when saving or exporting the estimate.

The calculator does not automatically add compaction to this example. Compaction can be appropriate for angular driveway or base aggregate installed in lifts, but it should not be applied automatically to rounded decorative stone.

Volume describes the space the material occupies; weight depends on bulk density; bag count is rounded upward; and cost uses only the prices entered. The estimate excludes delivery limits, tax rules, minimum orders, stockpile loss, and site access unless you enter an applicable value. How much extra rock should I order for waste?

There is no universal waste allowance. Enter a percentage only to cover defined handling loss, irregular edges, or measured site uncertainty, and do not reuse it for compaction or settlement.

When should I use a compaction allowance?

Use a compaction allowance only when a supplier, project specification, contractor, or measured field condition provides one for the selected material and installation. Keep it disabled for rounded, decorative, or oversized stone, and do not apply it to the same uncertainty already covered by waste.

Which rock is best for a driveway gravel calculator estimate?

Crushed Stone #57, crushed granite, trap rock, and crushed limestone are strong driveway choices because they drain well and compact into a stable surface. A decorative rounded stone is better for beds and drainage accents than for vehicle traffic.

What depth should I use for a landscaping rock calculator?

Use about 2 inches for decorative beds, 3 inches for walkways, 4 inches for patio bases and light driveways, and 6 inches or more for playground surfaces or heavier driveway sections. The project type dropdown fills these starting points automatically.
