Crushed stone estimates in the United States usually start with feet, inches, cubic yards, and short tons. The key is matching the calculator density to the product your local supplier sells.

Use US Units First

Most US crushed stone projects are measured in feet for length and width, inches for depth, cubic yards for volume, and short tons for ordering weight. A calculator result is strongest when each of those units stays clear.

For rectangular projects, calculate cubic feet first: length x width x depth. Convert depth from inches to feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards. Then multiply cubic yards by tons per cubic yard.

Density Matters

Crushed stone is not a single material. Limestone, granite, trap rock, recycled aggregate, and mixed road base can have different bulk densities. Moisture and gradation also matter. If a supplier says one cubic yard of their stone weighs a specific number of tons, use that value.

For early planning, crushed stone is often estimated around 1.45 to 1.70 tons per cubic yard, with many calculator defaults near 1.60. Treat that as a planning assumption, not a guarantee.

Example USA Calculation

A 20 ft by 30 ft parking pad at 6 inches deep has 300 cubic feet of volume. That is 11.11 cubic yards. At 1.60 tons per cubic yard, the estimate is 17.78 tons before waste. With 10% extra, the recommended planning order is about 19.56 tons.
