The amount of gravel for a driveway depends on the measured area, planned depth, base condition, density, compaction, and whether you are refreshing the surface or building a new section.

Driveway Gravel Formula

Use this formula for a rectangular driveway: cubic feet = length x width x depth. Length and width are measured in feet. Depth is measured in inches, then divided by 12 to convert it to feet. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards.

After cubic yards are known, multiply by material density to estimate tons. If the supplier gives a density value, use it. If not, a general gravel planning value around 1.35 tons per cubic yard can be used for a rough estimate.

For a 60 ft by 12 ft driveway at 4 inches deep:

Surface Layer vs Base Layer

A driveway surface refresh is not the same as a full driveway build. A surface layer improves coverage and appearance. A base layer supports traffic. If the existing driveway has potholes, pumping, standing water, or soft edges, more surface gravel alone may not solve the problem.

For a new driveway, many installers build in layers: larger base stone, compacted intermediate material, and a smaller top layer. Calculate each layer separately because each layer may use a different material density and depth.
