Stone Weight Calculator

Estimate stone volume, tons, and cost from dimensions.

Calculate Stone Weight

For the Stone Weight Calculator, enter length, width, depth, waste allowance, material density, and material price. It multiplies length, width, and installed depth, converts to cubic yards, applies allowance once, and converts volume to tons through the entered bulk density.

Formula used

Cubic yards = [length × width × (depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27] × (1 + waste ÷ 100); tons = cubic yards × density

Worked stone weight example

Stone Weight Calculator example: 23.1 ft × 13.5 ft × (4 in ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = 3.85 yd³ before allowance. After 10% allowance, the order basis is 4.24 yd³, or 6.35 short tons at 1.5 tons/yd³.

Volume, density, and supplier units

Use supplier density for bulk orders and fabricator data for solid pieces; do not use an aggregate tons-per-yard value for dimension stone.

Field conditions that change tonnage

Stone type, porosity, moisture, void space, gradation, and compaction can change density substantially.

Questions specific to this calculation

Which bulk density belongs in the stone weight tons estimate?

Enter the rectangular stone volume and use bulk density for loose aggregate or solid density for a cut stone block; those are different quantities.
