California Landscaping Rock Quote Guide

Coverage comes before cost
Cubic yards = square feet × (depth in inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27
Short tons = cubic yards × supplier bulk density
A 360 ft² bed at 2.5 in deep contains 75 ft³, or 2.78 yd³. Weight remains 2.78 × D short tons, where D is the supplier's bulk density for the exact stone. Keeping D explicit avoids assigning one density to every color, size, and source.

Bulk, bags, and pallets answer different needs
Bagged stone can make sense for a planter, sample area, or repair where a bulk delivery minimum dominates. Bulk stone is easier to compare for a large bed once cubic yards, tons, and delivery are normalized. Palletized cobble or specialty stone may be sold by package weight or count rather than loose volume, so use the vendor's coverage method.
For irregular beds, divide the plan into rectangles, circles, or measured segments. Calculate the intended stone layer only; do not count soil excavation, base, or fabric as rock depth.
Local conditions and current guidance
Hillsides, dense neighborhoods, long carries from the dump point, heat around plants, irrigation, runoff, and fire-conscious landscape decisions can affect material choice and installation cost. Requirements and official guidance change by location and over time, so check the current local fire authority, municipality, association, and project professionals before placing material near structures or drainage paths.

Break the bed into simple shapes and add them. Keep areas with different depths or products as separate calculations.
