Glass Weight Calculator

Estimate glass panel weight from size and thickness.

Reviewed: August 26, 2026

Calculate Glass Weight

For the Glass Weight Calculator, enter plate length, plate width, thickness, material density, and price per pound. It multiplies plate volume by the entered density and reports weight, short tons, and optional cost per pound.

Formula used

Plate weight = length × width × thickness × entered density

Worked glass weight example

Glass Weight Calculator example: 10.2 ft × 4.5 ft × (0.25 in ÷ 12) = 0.96 ft³. At the entered 156 lb/ft³, estimated weight is 149 lb (0.07 short tons).

Use the weight for planning

Use the result as a preliminary panel-weight check and obtain certified make-up weight from the fabricator before selecting hardware or lifting equipment.

Glass thickness and composition matter

Use actual glass thickness and a density appropriate to the product. Laminated glass includes interlayers, insulating units include multiple lites and spacers, and framed assemblies add hardware and edge components. The rectangular solid-lite estimate should not be used as the final handling weight for a complete glazing unit without those additions.

Why scale or supplier weight may differ

Laminated interlayers, coatings, frit, holes, notches, edgework, thickness tolerance, and insulated-glass spacers change unit weight.

Questions specific to this calculation

Which material density belongs in the glass weight result?

Enter finished glass length, width, thickness, and the density supplied for the glass product or laminate build-up.
