Calculate Deck Stain

For the Deck Stain Calculator, enter project area, coverage per unit, waste allowance, and unit price. It divides project area by the entered usable coverage, applies the allowance once, and rounds up to whole packages with an optional package cost.

Formula used

Units = ceil([project area ÷ coverage per unit] × [1 + waste ÷ 100])

Deck Stain Calculator measurement plan showing Project area square feet, Coverage per unit square feet / unit, Waste allowance percent

Worked deck stain example

Deck Stain Calculator example: 738 ft² × 1.1 = 811.8 ft² of order coverage. Dividing by 100 ft² per unit gives 8.12 units, so the purchase quantity is 9 whole units.

Package rounding and usable yield

Round to container sizes while keeping cleaner, brightener, primer, and different stain products outside the finish-coat quantity.

Coverage changes with the deck surface

New rough-sawn wood, weathered boards, previously coated lumber, and dense hardwood can absorb the same stain at different rates. Separate horizontal decking, railings, stairs, and a second coat when their spread rates differ. Use the product label for the application method and surface condition rather than treating one generic square-foot figure as universal.

Why the label value may not match the floor or wall

Wood porosity, age, preparation, sprayer loss, back-brushing, color change, and whether all board faces are coated affect yield.

Questions specific to this calculation

What usable coverage should I enter for deck stain?

Add the exposed faces that will actually be coated, including rails and stairs when applicable, and use the product spread rate for the surface condition and coat count.
